I recently started working on Side Hustles. A side hustle is a way to make some extra cash without quitting your day job. There are many many side hustles out there that you could start making extra income with right now. My mission started in late September, deciding that I no longer want to struggle from paycheck to paycheck. I know only I can do something about my financial future. Starting by signing up for all the survey companies that I could find, I decided to try them all out. I have a few favorites, and some that I do not care for. By using the ones I like on a regular basis, I am rewarded with gift cards and points to redeem online.
I also started posting items on Ebay and Craigslist for extra income. Everyone has items that they can sell for additional monthly income. I have almost nothing to my name, but I was still able to find items that I could sell to make some much needed cash. When I started on this quest, I was skeptical about seeing profits from Ebay sales. My worry was that the shipping costs and fees would just eat up my profits, but now I feel like I have done okay.
Below is a table that shows my Craigslist and Ebay sales and fees paid including shipping costs for items sold. I did sell a couple of oddly shaped items and heavier items that increased my shipping costs. Of course, with any new endeavor there will be a learning curve. As you can see below, in September I was charged only $1.50 for one of my listing fees. You can list most items for free depending on how many pictures you want and various other options. October’s fees include the Final Value Fees of the items that I sold in October. Ebay’s Final Value Fees vary, depending on the category.
|Ebay Fee & Shipping Cost||-$1.50||-$56.00||-$95.99|
So, as you can see it is possible to profit from using Craigslist and Ebay as a side hustle. It does take time to take photos of the items that you are selling. After the photos are taken, you then download them to your computer and start posting on whichever site you are using for your selling base. This takes anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour depending on how many pictures you have, and how descriptive you are. Items sell fastest when the pictures are of good quality so make sure you take your time in this area. I like to display my items as I see others have with a dark backdrop and good lighting.
Another tip that helps your Ebay items to sell faster is to use Expedited Shipping. Customers love it when their package arrives in 2-4 days rather than a week later. Expedited Shipping does cost more than Economy Shipping. You can price your item accordingly to make up for this difference.
In conclusion, I have made a small profit from selling items with Ebay and Craigslist. I don’t know that this will be a long term side hustle for me, just because of the seller fees that are deducted by Ebay. Maybe in the future, I will focus more on Craigslist advertising as a viable source of income. Hopefully sharing my first few months experience allows everyone to see the opportunity this side hustle creates.
